First taste of cake

Not extremely enthused and not sure why everyone clapped, but he still enjoyed it.

Happy birthday, Spencer!

The days are long, but the years are short.  That is a wise observation about parenting in my opinion.  It's crazy that Spencer turned 1 this weekend. We had a nice picnic in Golden Gate Park to celebrate with beautiful 70-degree, sunny weather. Our local friends with babies, my parents, and my brother and Derek were there to celebrate with us, which was fitting since they all helped support us this year too. The past year has been both the best and the hardest of our lives, and I am excited to see where the next year takes us.

At one year old, Spencer is getting close to walking but isn't there yet, as he prefers his perfected one-legged crawl.  He can walk around all furniture with one hand (actually, more like a finger or two), pull up on pretty much everything, and push his walker around the room with ease (and some speed), but he hasn't made the transition to standing on his own or taking steps unassisted.  He also can repeat a lot of sounds lately, including fish (to indicate that he want to touch his mobile above his crib), mama/dada, and vroom vroom (when he pushes cars across the floor) -- but his communication via pointing, grunting, crying, and laughing are still pretty effective.  Some of his favorite things to do are to clap his hands, help turn light switches on and off, play peek-a-boo under blankets, be thrown in the air or bounced high on your lap, swing at the park, and -- of course -- throw sand around at the beach.   He is getting pickier about food lately, but his favorites are scrambled eggs, baguettes, raspberries, bananas, and oranges.  I don't know how it is possible, but he is getting more personality every day and cracks us up constantly. From stealing other kids' food at daycare to spinning triumphantly in circles on his butt to show his excitement, this boy is not a wallflower. I didn't envision being the parent forcing others to look at pictures of my child, but I am now seriously entertained watching videos of him on repeat.  Keep leading us on this wild adventure, Spencer :)

Exploring with family

I mean, can he be any cuter?

Snapshots of personality

There is never a dull moment with this guy. Here are some videos of Spencer over the past month or so:
